about

Brett Cimbalik's debut release, Glaciology, is a mixture of avantgarde rock, ambient music, and soundscapes. As a thank-you for a wonderful year, and to mark the 2014 Winter Solstice, we’re re-issuing Glaciology as a free download.

Glaciology was initially given away to family and friends via CD-R in the months following Christmas 2007, establishing a precedent for Brett's stylistic eccentricities. As an introduction to the sounds of Brett Cimbalik, there are traces of icy tones; jazz guitar; shred; dubby synths; ambient sound signatures; funky licks; droning and more.

“I hadn’t recorded any of my own songs before and I wanted to create a “me” record,” says Cimbalik. “I had been playing in local bands, and working on r&b and hip hop productions, but I never made anything personal.”

Glaciology begins with “Windrift,” a haunting ballad dedicated to falling snow and ice. Brett’s guitar solo is soul-penetrating; northern lights pass overhead, and night turns into day.

“I like winter, Antarctica and the wintry aesthetic. I wanted to get people to appreciate the winter by listening to music made for it.  I know I’ve gotten into something because of the way a certain artist can reframe your point of view. I was hoping Glaciology would do that for winter.”

“Glow” starts with an arpeggio; a long winter drive through the back country. Hypnotic music, fully enveloping the listener into their own head. “Almost as if Van Halen created a soundtrack for winter.”

The snow and neon lights of Glaciology continue into “Glitch,” a series of sketches and loops from video game soundtracks to ringtones. “Expanse” is murky, dubby; wandering through a frozen cityscape in two feet of snow. Steam rises out of sewers; heating vents pump warp air from long-shuddered buildings. Lightly cracking ice on a quiet morning takes the listener into “Energy Drive”: grass emerges from snow-covered land; water flows again.

This re-issue of Glaciology marks the first release from Detroit/Queens based record label Service Parts Operations (SPO), a series of releases that reexamine the relationship between deep space, sonic concept, artist and listener.
